Department of Informatics

Renato Pajarola appointed new Chairman of the Department of Informatics

The University of Zurich has appointed Renato Pajarola as new Chairman of the Department of Informatics (IfI) as of August 2018. Building on the foundations laid by his predecessor Abraham Bernstein, he will continue guiding IfI into a bright future. Several professorships are coming up, student numbers are growing, and many of IfI’s research topics are flourishing.

Renato Pajarola

Renato Pajarola has been Professor of Informatics at the University of Zurich since 2005. After receiving his PhD from ETH Zurich in 1998, he spent several years at the University of California at Irvine before moving to IfI, where he took over the MultiMedia Laboratory from Prof. Peter Stucki and transformed it into the Visualization and MultiMedia Lab.

In addition to his full professorship position at IfI, Renato Pajarola also has a joint appointment as professor in the Faculty of Science at UZH. Furthermore, beyond his academic work, he has actively been promoting Informatics generally in Switzerland, being involved in various events like the «Nacht der Forschung», «Scientifica», or the «Informatiktage».

After two years as head of the department (2016–2018) Abraham Bernstein has decided to step down as Department Chair, so that he can focus on his full professorship at IfI and on his work as director of the UZH Digital Society Initiative. The department would like to extend its sincere gratitude to Avi for his active commitment to increasing IfI’s excellence and to fortifying its reputation as a leading Swiss research center in Informatics.
