Manuel Günther becomes Assistant Professor for Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning

As of 1 July 2020 the Board of the University has appointed Manuel Günther as Assistant Professor for Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning.

Warmly welcome, Manuel!

Manuel Günther

Manuel Günther received his diploma in Computer Science and his doctoral degree (Dr.-Ing.) from the Technical University of Ilmenau in 2004 and 2012. Between 2012 and 2015, he was a postdoctoral researcher in the Biometrics Group at the Idiap Research Institute in Martigny. Since then, he is actively participating in the implementation of the open source signal processing and machine learning library Bob, particularly he was the leading developer of the Biometric Recognition packages. From 2015 to 2018, he was working as a Research Associate at the Vision and Security Technology Lab at the University of Colorado where he developed algorithms for the alignment-free classification of facial attributes from single facial images.

After a short industry excursion at trinamiX GmbH in Ludwigshafen he accepted a call as an Assistant Professor at the University of Zurich.

Besides face biometrics, Manuel's research interests include deep neural networks, so-called adversarial samples that can fool deep networks, and the classification of samples under the presence of unknown classes. Furthermore, he is actively pursuing reproducible research, which allows researchers to start working at the state of the art.

At the Department of Informatics, Manuel is planning to continue to work on the classification of the unknown and on automatic face recognition.
