Main objectives of the symposium
In this symposium we want to bring together researchers in data mining with researchers extracting information from programs and processes.
The conference will feature:
- Plenary talks by international leaders in the field, and
- Lightening talks (15-20 min) by some participants and demos of new prototype tools
- Chit-chat talks (6 min) by PhD students to foster the exchange of new and emerging ideas.
- Furthermore, we will provide ample opportunities for small working groups on themes suggested by the participants.
We also expect the conference to outline a set of challenges and related benchmarks. This will help to focus the research effort in this field and provide a basis for comparing the results of different research groups. We expect the conference to result in ample cross-fertilization between the different research areas and to show up exciting directions for improving the understanding of real-life programs and their history.

Expected scientific impact
The expected scientific impact is to develop a Mining Software Archives Manifesto that describes to which extent such archives can be exploited to support the development of software. This is envisioned to change the way software is assessed, how processes and products are analyzed and to which extent such data can be prepared for different roles such as developers, testers, architects, or project managers.
Participation
We expect about 40-50 international participants with an additional 15-20 PhD students.
PhD student application
MSA 2010 is offering some student funding for PhD students in the subject area of the symposium to participate and exchange their research ideas with renowned experts in the field. The travel grant will cover parts of the expenses, typically in the range of 500+ chf, depending on the number of applicants and the funding we have available.
