NordiCHI 2024: Engaging with Feminist HCI, Cultural Sensitivity, and Intelligent Technology

The NordiCHI 2024 conference saw a (very) active participation from the ZPAC lab, with presentations, panel discussions, and poster sessions highlighting our research at the intersection of Feminist HCI, cultural sensitivity, and intelligent technology.

Kicking off the discussions, Lu presented the paper "Do They Act the Way They Look": Examining Portrayals of Intelligent Technology in Narrative Media from an Educational Perspective. Her work contributed to the ongoing discourse on how AI is represented in media and its implications for learning. The full study is available here.

Continuing the engagement with critical topics, Nimra took part in the Conversations on Distance and Diversity panel, where she explored the intersections of diversity, inclusion, and the challenges of studying distant communities in HCI research.

Bringing attention to gender-aware design, she also presented the paper "Women just have to accept it when the man wants it': An Investigation of the Practice of Forced Marriage and the Potential for Design Interventions" in the Gender Aware HCI session. This study, supported by DIZH, delves into the challenges individuals face in avoiding or escaping forced marriage and offers design considerations for technology that can support those affected. The full study is available here.

Tim Schluchter and Nimra also showcased their work on "Design Cards for Culturally Sensitive Mental Health Technologies" at the Poster Session. Additionally, they stepped in for Ibrahim Al Hazwani to present research on familiarity and urgency in personal explanations for recommender systems. Extended abstracts for both posters can be found here and here. Extended abstracts for both posters can be found here and here.

Overall, NordiCHI 2024 provided an excellent platform for engaging conversations, critical insights, and meaningful exchanges on technology’s role in addressing social challenges.
