In the media: The Impact of Prediction Markets on Democratic Processes

Burkhard Stiller, Professor of Communication Systems at the Department of Informatics, explores what happens when complex political decision-making processes are reduced to game-theoretic frameworks.

Prediction markets, platforms where individuals can bet on various outcomes, have gained significant attention in recent years. Due to the anonymity of users and the use of cryptocurrencies, it has become virtually impossible to track who is placing bets or identify their underlying motives.

According to Burkhard Stiller, these markets pose a substantial risk to democratic processes. He argues that democracy is fundamentally built on the ability of parliaments and governments to reach a consensus and make informed decisions for the public good and not on individual bets.
