WINZ (Women in Informatics Network Zurich)is a community for women, FLINTA+, and allies at the Department of Informatics. We create safe, creative, and supportive spaces where people can connect, learn, and grow, personally, academically, and professionally.

Our community is built on care, authenticity, and mutual support. We believe that everyone should have a place to show up as themselves, find encouragement, and build confidence in their path through informatics. WINZ hosts both community and academic events, from informal meet-ups to mentoring programs, designed to foster meaningful relationships and strengthen belonging within our department.

Our goals:

  • Foster an inclusive and supportive environment that empowers women, FLINTA+ individuals, and allies to thrive in computing.
  • Increase visibility and recognition of contributions from women and marginalized communities across research, design, and technology.
  • Encourage mentorship, recruitment, and retention of underrepresented groups at all stages — from students to professionals — through community and knowledge sharing.
  • Promote equitable learning and working environments that center wellbeing, belonging, and care.
  • Strengthen collaboration and communication across individuals, groups, and organizations committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion in computing.

At its heart, WINZ is about creating an environment where diversity and inclusion are not just ideals but daily practices. We celebrate the many ways people contribute to computing and technology, and we work to ensure that all voices, especially those from marginalized communities, are heard, valued, and empowered.

Our focus

Grid containing content elements

We host recurring community events such as book clubs, creative collaging sessions, and study meet-ups to foster a supportive and inclusive environment at IfI. These informal gatherings offer a safe and creative space for women, FLINTA+, and allies to connect, unwind, and support one another, strengthening both peer relationships and our departmental culture.

Academic & Career Growth

More about Academic & Career Growth

We organize talks, panels, and networking events with speakers from academia and industry to encourage learning, exchange, and professional development. These events highlight diverse pathways in computing, create opportunities for mentorship and collaboration, and help bridge the gap between students, researchers, and professionals.

Mentoring Prgoramm (coming soon)

More about Mentoring Prgoramm (coming soon)

We are building a mentoring program that connects undergraduate students with graduate students, and graduate students with postdocs and faculty, fostering guidance and growth at every level. Alongside this, WINZ supports outreach initiatives such as programming workshops for young girls to spark early interest in computing and empower the next generation.
