Official opening of the new BIM building
On September 10, 2026, the new BIM building at Binzmühlestrasse 11 was officially opened 🎉 Members of the university and guests came together to celebrate the occasion and discover the new home of the Department of Informatics and the University Library.
The new building brings research, learning, work, and exchange together under one roof. Alongside its new spaces for students, researchers, staff, and visitors, it features a newly designed canteen area and an open courtyard that offers another place to meet and connect at the Oerlikon campus. Impressions of the building, its courtyard, and the opening celebration can be found in the photo gallery below.
The official opening began with welcoming remarks from representatives of the University of Zurich, its faculties, and the institutions based at the Oerlikon campus. Among the speakers were Prof. Dr. Gabriele Siegert, Vice President of the University of Zurich, Prof. Dr. Harald Gall, Dean of the Faculty of Business, Economics and Informatics, Prof. Dr. Rudolf Mumenthaler, Director of the University Library, and Prof. Dr. Burkhard Stiller, Director of the Department of Informatics.
After the official part, guests had the opportunity to experience the new building first-hand during guided tours. The celebration continued with an apéro and music from a DJ, while the new canteen treated guests to a selection of culinary specialties and refreshments.
The opening offered a fitting start for the new BIM building and a first glimpse of the many possibilities the new spaces provide. We look forward to seeing the building become a lively place for research, learning, collaboration, and exchange for the Department of Informatics, the University Library, and the wider university community.
