Honorable Mention Award at Designing Interactive Systems Conference 2026
Clara-Maria Barth, Anton Fedosov, Chat Wacharamanotham, Jürgen Bernard, and Elaine M. Huang received the Honorable Mention Award at the Designing Interactive Systems Conference 2026 for their paper “How Do I Want to Live with Type 1 Diabetes? Understanding Self-Management Styles to Inform the Design of T1D Technologies” – Congratulations 🎉
The paper contributes to research in HCI by asking how health technologies can better account for the diverse ways people integrate chronic conditions into everyday life. Focusing on T1D, the authors question the design of current T1D technologies, which often focus narrowly on clinical metrics such as blood glucose values and time in range. They show that there are many different ways of doing well with T1D, and that “doing well” also includes personal priorities, daily practices, and individual definitions of success.
Based on interviews, a diary study, and a workshop with people living with T1D, the paper introduces self-management styles as a multidimensional and shifting design lens for understanding different ways of living with and managing chronic conditions. The work encourages designers and researchers to consider which ways of living current technologies support, which ones they overlook, and how future systems can better account for the diverse experiences and practices that are at the heart of living with a chronic condition.
