Goal of the thesis

The goal of this thesis is to clarify what the term enterprise blockchain really means- How does an enterprise blockchain differ from other blockchain systems? What kind of blockchains are out there and how can we classify different blockchain systems?

Background and problem statement

Blockchain, often claimed as the most disruptive technology of the century is gaining more and more importance in both, academia and practice. For enterprises, blockchain applications promise a significant amount of business value, like transacting directly with trading partners, eliminating the need for reconciliations, instantly tracking assets, providing robust data provenance, settling transactions quickly and cheaply and enabling a security model that is fault tolerant, resilient, and available. Thus, enterprises are experimenting with the technology and with that, especially in the business context, the term Enterprise Blockchain started emerging. However, what it really means and how it differs from other blockchain systems is yet an open question.

Hence, this thesis aims to bring light into the (enterprise) blockchain world by evaluation (among others) the following questions:

- How dies the blockchain community define "Enterprise Blockchain"?

- How is "Enterprise Blockchain" used in practice?

Thesis Approach

For this thesis the student will apply a combination of qualitative and quantitative analysis. This includes on the one hand, a thorough review of academic and business papers, analyzing how the term enterprise blockchain is used in wiring. On the other hand, the student will look into real world blockchain projects exploring what enterprises mean by "enterprises blockchain".

Requirements

For this master thesis, we are looking for:

  • Highly motivated students with a strong interest for blockchain technology, obtaining a Master degree.
  • Students should have a confident knowledge in business informatics. Basic knowledge of blockchain as well as prior software development would be a key advantage.
  • Knowledge of German is very welcomed.
