Description of contents

This lecture covers the management challenges and opportunities posed by information systems and offers methods to solve those problems. After completion of this course, the student is able to describe the problems and the tasks related to IT management, to explain these problems and tasks and to solve example tasks.

Exercises will include case studies, small projects and paper reading.

There will be guest lectures.

Educational objectives

This lecture covers the management challenges and opportunities posed by information systems and offers methods to solve those problems. After completion of this course, the student is able to describe the problems and the tasks related to IT management, to explain these problems and tasks and to solve example tasks. Furthermore, students will be able to critically reflect on information management literature.

  1. The lecture is held in English (homework may be handed in either in German or English, presentations and class interactions are in English, the exam may be written in German or English).
  2. The lecture will be interactive: There will typically be one lecture session per week and one exercise session. Exercise participation is part of the grade. Exercises require on site (!) presence in both the prior lecture and in the exercise sessions. For attendance, we will give attendance points.
  3. Note that all written announcements will only be made using OLAT.

Prior knowledge

Basic knowledge in Business Administration and Information Systems. For business students: Minor in Informations Systems (=Wirtschaftsinformatik).

Target group

Master students in Computer Science as well as Minors, Master students in Business Administration or Finance.

Certificate of achievement

The students need to pass two parts in order to pass the course:

  1. During the semester, the students need to pass three of the four homework tasks. They can furthermore collect points from attendance and successfull homeworks that count towards the exam.
  2. At the end of the semester, there will be a written exam (scheduled for 14.01.2027 (10-12)). The examination of the module will take place onsite. 

The exam grade will be course grade.  

If students do not successfully pass three homework task or fail the exam they do not pass the course.
