Postdoc Position in AI/ML for Green Software Engineering

The Software Engineering Group (s.e.a.l.) of the Department of Informatics (IfI) at the University of Zurich, Switzerland, invites applications for an opening as postdoctoral researcher in the area of “Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML) for Green Software Engineering.” The successful applicant will work in the group of Prof. Dr. Harald C. Gall.

The rapid growth of digital transformation and, more recently, AI technologies has led to a significant increase in energy consumption by software systems. While the awareness of carbon emissions continues to rise, sustainability efforts on the software side remain largely underexplored. To address these challenges and support sustainability goals, we are looking for a postdoc in “AI/ML for Green Software Engineering” which involves conducting advanced research at the intersection of AI/ML, software development and sustainability. As a postdoc you will explore innovative ways in applying AI/ML techniques to improve software engineering activities such as, source code analysis, software evolution and architecture design, code generation, defect prediction, software testing automation, or optimizing software performance with respect to sustainability (resource consumption, energy efficient code, and sustainable deployment).

A background in AI/ML and software engineering is required, and candidates with a strong foundation in the above fields will be given preference. The goal is to develop cutting-edge solutions that enhance the efficiency, reliability, and quality of software development practices. As a postdoctoral researcher, you are expected to deliver impactful research results and regularly publish in top venues of software engineering and AI. You will also have the opportunity to co-supervise Ph.D. students and teach some courses such as advanced software engineering.

The Software Engineering Group is one of three chairs in SE (Alberto Bacchelli, Thomas Fritz, Harald Gall) that currently include five postdocs and about 10 PhD students. The research spans a wide area of topics, from empirical software engineering to software repository mining and to AI/ML for software evolution, sustainability and processes (code review, DevOps, CI/CD). For our research, we collaborate closely with industrial partners, including Microsoft, Logitech, ABB, Hitachi, Salesforce, Accenture, and Adesso, as well as with university researchers around the globe. We focus on impactful research and regularly publish in top international journals and conferences in Software Engineering, Human-Computer Interaction, and Computer Supported Collaborative Work.

More information on the research of the Software Engineering Group in which the postdoc position is offered is available on the group webpage: https://www.ifi.uzh.ch/seal.
