Independent Study

About

An independent study is a graded module that allows students to concentrate on
working independently on a specific topic, helping them learn to work on their own, see the IfI Teaching website for details.

I'm supporting independent studies, as they are a promising concept to get students involved with research activities quite early in their studies.

I'm offering independent study supervision to individual students who a) have an intrinsic motivation to study a particular subject and b) can prove to have skills and expertise needed to succeed in their study goal. Type and intensity of study supervision very much depends on the individual study setting and is subject to constructive negotiation. Generally, every independent study in my research group is always elaborated by only a single student (do a masters project if you plan to group up).

Types of Independent Studies

  • literature study
  • small-scale research project
  • software development, open source
  • implementation of an algorithm
  • design and execution of an experiment / user study
  • data study
  • design study
