Prof. Dr. Dan Olteanu

Dan Olteanu teaching

I am a chair professor of computer science and the head of the DaST (Data Systems and Theory) group at the Department of Informatics, University of Zurich.

I spend my time understanding computational challenges on data processing and designing simple and scalable solutions towards these challenges.
My theoretical research includes the development of novel data processing algorithms and of data processing languages along with the analysis of their complexities. My systems research is on building data systems in academia and industry based on well-understood theory.

My contributions are on theoretical foundations and systems aspects of data processing, including XML query processing, incomplete information and probabilistic databases, factorised databases, machine learning over relational data, incremental maintenance for database and machine learning, and the commercial systems LogicBlox and RelationalAI.

I currently serve as associate editor for the following journals:

Since mid 2022 I am the chair of the International Conference on Database Theory (ICDT) council.
