My research investigates the use of interactive media and cooperation technologies for the design of information flows, knowledge and cooperation networks which enable new forms of social and economic interactions. This work benefits from three interconnected lines of research and expertise:
eCollaboration / Information & Knowledge Management
strategies and technologies for collaboration and knowledge management in complex organizations and multi-stakeholder networks,
Participatory Media / User-Centric Media / Web 2.0
design of networked information and communication structures, social interaction and cooperation in networks, user-generated content, open innovation and integration of end-users as active co-creators in professional value chains,
Interactive Systems / Human-System Interaction
user-centred design and evaluation of interactive systems and services, design of socio-technical systems mediating interactions between individuals, organizations and institutions.

Executive summary of professional profile.
Resume
Dr. Jasminko Novak leads the Collaboration and Media Technologies Lab at the Information Management Research Group. Since April 2007 he also acts as Managing Chairman of the European Institute for Participatory Media, Berlin/ Zurich/Rome.
Prior to that he worked as senior researcher, project manager and team leader at the Fraunhofer Institute for Media Communication (now Fraunhofer IAIS). His responsibilities at Fraunhofer included the conception, acquisition and leadership of cooperative research projects (BMBF, EU-IST) with partners from academia, industry and public institutions. Among others, this includes the leadership of the “AWAKE” project for the development of new methods for collaborative knowledge visualisation and exchange in heterogeneous networks, which was nominated for the Cooperative Research Award of the Foundation for German Science (“Stiftungsverband für die deutsche Wissenschaft”, 2003). The results of this work were also part of his doctoral dissertation on collaborative knowledge visualization for cross-community knowledge exchange at the Institute for Informatics and Applied Cognitive Science at the University of Duisburg-Essen (summa cum laude).
The results of Mr. Novak's work have been published in international journals, conference proceedings (ACM, IEEE) and in several book contributions (Springer). He has co-founded the Center for International Education in Zagreb and has served as advisory board member of the Multimedia Institute in Zagreb. He also advises the European Commision in the Expert Groups on User-Centric Media and Future Internet and acts as expert evaluator for the World Bank and the Croatian Government.
Other areas of his work include hci, collaboration technologies and mobile & ubiquitous computing. Dr. Novak conceived and coordinated a pilot project for the creation of a German-Hungarian distributed research group on “Nomadic Knowledge Computing” (2005). In a research period at the Dept. of Computer Science, Systemics and Communication at the University of Milano-Bicocca (2003) he investigated new forms of supporting and managing knowledge-intensive innovation procesess with special focus on distruptive innovation and sustainability.
Dr. Novak serves as a reviewer for a number of international conferences (CHI, ICIS, HICSS, WI) and journals as well as member of several Programm Committees (e.g. Mensch and Computer, SIWIS Workshop at ECIS 2007, Multi-Conference on Business Informatics - MKWI 08). He is also member of the ACM SIGCHI and SIG-eCommerce, GI FB MCI, SIG-CHI and of the CONVIVIO Network for People-Centred Design of Interactive Systems.
