SNF SPIRIT grant for Renato Pajarola

Renato has received, together with partners from the University of Buenos Aires, an SNF SPIRIT grant of 500K CHF for the project «UnWeather Vizard: Uncertainty Visualization and Analysis of High-Resolution Numeric Weather Forecasts». Congratulations!

The project is a collaboration between the Visualization and MultiMedia Lab, Department of Informatics at UZH and the Center for Oceanic and Atmospheric Research Department of Atmospheric and Ocean Sciences at the University of Buenos Aires (UBA).

This research project will address the problem oof analyzing, visualizing and communicating the variability and uncertainty effects associated with short-term and high-resolution numerical weather prediction (NWP) systems in the context of high-impact weather events (HIWE) such as flash floods, strong surface winds, large hail and even tornadoes, typically caused by heavy thunderstorms. The goal is to develop novel interactive visual analytics (VA) techniques and tools to better support atmospheric scientists in their task of predicting imminent HIWE and subsequent warnings from collections and ensembles of computed weather predictions.
