Curriculum

Curriculum

Doctoral students have to acquire knowledge and practical skills during the doctoral curriculum. Additionally students have to write and present a research proposal. Doctoral students in the "fast-track" program can write and present a research proposal instead of a master thesis. The end of the doctoral studies is the writing of a doctoral thesis, which has to be defended in a oral examination.

ECTS for Categories

According to the current rules, doctoral candidates have to obtain 30 ECTS points before handing in the doctoral thesis. These 30 ECTS break down into six different categories (see table below) to gather both disciplinary and transferable skills during the doctoral education.

Category 30 ECTS
1 Doctoral Courses, Doctoral Seminars, Summer-schools, Doctoral Symposia 6 ECTS
2 Research Methodology 3 ECTS
3 Research Colloquia 3 ECTS
4 Didactics and Scientific Communication 3 ECTS
5 Teaching Practice 6 ECTS
6 Research Practice 9 ECTS

Table 1: Minimally required ECTS in the 6 categories.

Doctoral students in the "fast-track" program have to obtain 10 ECTS according to the table 2 already on the master's level. For those students the number of ECTS in the categories according to table 1 are reduced by the numbers given by table 2. So, doctoral students in the fast track program have to obtain only 20 ECTS on the doctoral level.

Category 10 ECTS
1 Doctoral Courses, Doctoral Seminars, Summer-schools, Doctoral Symposia 3 ECTS
2 Research Methodology 3 ECTS
3 Research Colloquia 1 ECTS
4 Didactics and Scientific Communication 3 ECTS

Table 2: ECTS obtained during master's study in the fast track program.

Categories 1, 2, and 4 can be summerized as courses, category 3 means the ifi-research colloquium, which takes place every semester and categories 5 and 6 address the practice in teaching and research (i.e. mostly writing publications). By following the links, you get access to the rules, for obtaining ECTS in these categories.
