Continuous Deployment Deep Dive Study

In our research, we are currently interested in how companies roll out their software. Continuous deployment is associated with several practices supporting companies in this process targeting faster customer feedback and thus building the right product.

To get an overall view, we conducted an empirical study on how the practices associated to continuous deployment are used within industry: https://peerj.com/preprints/1889/

However, there are a few things where we lack some more profound insights, especially when considering practices such as gradual rollouts (canary releases) or A/B testing. We are interested in how such live testing experiments are actually conducted, for which features, who is responsible, etc. An example question would be:

  • "How long does the process of gradually rolling out a new version usually take? What are the metrics to be monitored, who decides about these metrics, and are there any thresholds for them?"

We want to talk to software engineers, DevOps, or release engineers and do short and focussed interviews (20-30 minutes) and do a deep dive into live testing experimentation in the context of continuous deployment.

If you are able to help us out or have any question, feel free to contact Gerald Schermann.
