A Mobile MultiMedia Architecture for the Virtual Workplace

Due to new means of communication and increasing demand for worker flexibility, many workplaces will become mobile in the near future. To support such workplaces, this project is defining an architecture that enables end-users to specify workgroups, workflows, and workflow patterns. The architecture offers support to users via visual specification techniques, software agents, data flow tracking, and annotations. These capabilities are based on a resource management scheme that handles trade-offs of data storage vs. calculation, as well as client vs. server storage (i.e., local storage vs. transmission of remote data). A prototype implementation is developed with Newton palmtop computers on the client side and Java on the server side.
