Very large-scale 3D data sets are common in scientific visualization domains such as medical imaging, physical simulations and geo-visualization. Besides data sets of geo-spatial extents such as terrain height-fields, also volumetric data sets from numerical simulations and bio/medical imaging devices are immense and can reach sizes of billions of data samples. We investigate novel data structures and algorithms to display and interact with huge scientific data sets. In particular we develop new multiresolution models and multi-scale representations, out-of-core data structures as well as interactive rendering methods for large polygonal meshes and volume data sets.
