About me

I'm a research assistant and doctoral student at the Dynamic and Distributed Information Systems Group (DDIS) at the Department of Informatics. Before coming to Zurich, I studied computational visualistics at the University of Koblenz, Germany, and graduated with a diploma in computer science.  My diploma thesis emerged from a 6 months stay in Rwanda where I developed an e-learning system for Rwandan farmers. This is also where I first became aware of the importance of cultural usability - a topic I have continued to investigate within the scope of my PhD thesis on culturally adaptive user interfaces.

Research interests

I'm especially interested in Human-Computer Interaction and how this differs between users of different cultural backgrounds. My aim is to detect such differences and improve usability with the help of machine learning. Some key words:

  • Adaptive User Interfaces
  • (Cultural) User Modelling in the Semantic Web
  • Recommender systems for learning and adapting to user preferences
  • Human-Computer Interaction in general

For more information on my PhD thesis on Cultural User Modelling and Adaptive User Interfaces, please have a look at the CUMO project page or at my publications.
