This project is an interactive art exhibition which was displayed at a science fair called Science et Cité in Zürich in May of 2001. This system uses new techniques of artificial 'growth' processes. The use of growth in Genetic Algorithms will reduce or eliminate some of the disadvantages of explicit genotype-phenotype mappings. The advantages of implicit 'growth' mappings include good scalability, long AND short range evolutionary search and adaption to the environment during growth. For example, if our genes encoded the length of our muscles and bones explicitly then any change to one of them would require an equal change in the other. The probability of this is very small and there are MANY other similar couplings. However, with implicit growth, this is not so much of a problem. The system here uses the method to 'grow' art forms. These forms can be selected by the user and bred or mutated, to allow exploration of art. It is blurring the boundaries between artist and critic. It is 'art by criticism'. See the publications page for more details.
And a couple of movies. You will need a DivX codec to play them.
I would suggest saving them to your harddrive first if you
have problems trying to run them directly from your browser.
